The Role of IP Actions at Various TRL Levels
By Erdem Kaya, managing partner Erdem Kaya Patent ve Dan. A.Ş
Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) are a method of estimating the maturity of technologies during the acquisition phase of a program. The scale ranges from 1 to 9, where TRL 1 represents basic principles observed and TRL 9 signifies a technology fully deployed and operational. Understanding where a technology sits on this scale can help innovators and startups decide on the appropriate intellectual property (IP) actions, particularly regarding patents.

Ensuring Patent Quality for Sustainable Innovation: A Conference Report
On June 14, 2024, industry leaders, academics, and legal experts gathered for the Industry Patent Quality Charter Conference, focused on addressing the pressing issue of patent quality. The conference underscored the fundamental role that high-quality patents play in fostering innovation and maintaining the integrity of the intellectual property (IP) system. Despite advancements, concerns about the current examination principles of patent offices were thoroughly discussed, revealing a landscape where many granted patents may not hold up under scrutiny, thereby wasting resources and potentially hindering crucial innovations.

Access to specialists, such as doctors, is still very unevenly distributed around the world, and in many regions it is a challenge to get appropriate medical help. This problem can be addressed by the increasing availability of digital services and their use in rural communities in particular. One example that has enabled rural communities in China to receive better medical care is Ping An Good Doctor. This is a digital service that matches you with suitable medical experts completely online. How Ping An uses intellectual property to protect the critical elements of its digital customer journey is described here by our students.

Value Determination for Value-in-use Situations
The main feature of the value-in-use concept is its independence from an external third party. The value concept treats the source of the cash flows to be determined as an abstract market that must be modelled with sufficiently available information. The value is realised via the value chain in the IP-owning company. The model boundaries are therefore centred around the IP-owning company. The internal complementary goods of the IP-owning company are decisive for the ability to create an economic benefit from this IP.
